Day 23 — Sugar Gliders

This little beauty is named Petal. She is a 3 year old Sugar Glider. She was the untouched pet given to a college student who could not care for these pets beyond meeting their basic needs. She didn’t hold them, tame them. We have worked hard with Petal over the years but she is not what she could be as far as a pet, she needs other gliders for company. She had a mate but today he died.

Let this be yet another lesson to anyone who has these fluff balls as pets, check their pouches daily for wholes and make sure you see your gliders out each night. Our male, Jerry, was not out last night, we where up very late and I remember thinking he must be sleeping in. I didn’t check on him. My husband found him with his claw stuck, he died of dehydration. Tragic and preventable.

Not Petal is alone, gliders should not be kept alone. We are searching high and low for another glider her age and badly wishing we had not gotten her daughters new homes before winter as they where tame and friendly and sweet and would have been good company for her. This area is scarce for such animals and we might be hunting for a long while. It is hard on the heart.
