The Secret Life of Lilykins

This is a darling book about a cat named Lilykins and the adventures she has in her imagination. Nothing is beyond her wonder and exploration. My children love cats and love to pretend with them as well so this book was perfect for them. One of my daughters also has a history with a stuffed animal cat that was named Lilykins whom she adored. Sadly she left him outside and then he was no more… and worse still, they no longer make him! I thought this book would give her some of her old beloved kitty back and I think it did just that. She was talking about how in her imagination she still has him and the adventures he still goes on with her. It was heart melting for sure.

In this book Lilykins has 2 Dads and a Brother. I loved this part because I was a surrogate mother for a gay couple and have 2 children, with 2 dads. My children know and love their surrogate family deeply. It isn’t often though they get to read about other families with 2 Dads and I think that it is very important. Families come in so many forms and they need to be celebrated.

Lilykins in the book dreams of catching birds, being the hero, and going to far away places. She even dreams that she is a queen, though most cat owners know already that their beloved fluff balls are already queens in point of fact.

If you have a child that loves cats too, this is the book to get! It is wonderfully written in a sing song way that kids love and the artwork is cute! I look forward to seeing more books by this Author!
