Children’s Book Review: Rhubarb By Stephen Cosgrove

A mothers love of books

It all started I suppose when I was a young girl, my mother loved to read and loved books. She would read to us and tell us tails of far off lands and stories she made out of thin air. It was magical with her, the good times that is. She left when I was 6 and I didn’t often see her much after that though she was as ever still my mother. I kept her cat, and her love of reading.

School was a wonderland to me and my favorite part being the books. My Dad would give me money for the book fairs that would come through and I remember I specially love getting these thin little books with morals in them and stickers too! The book line “A Serendipity Book” is beautiful and reminds me of the best times in my childhood. As a mother now, I want to share my love of books with my children of course and have started to collect this book line. They aren’t new, or shiny, and they don’t have the stickers in them anymore but they are still beautiful and heart touching.

My husband and I opened a box full of books I have been gathering and asked our children to pick a few to read tonight. This was one of them.

About Rhubarb

Rhubard, or rather Ruby as her friends call her is an adorable little puppy that lives on a farm out in the country. She seems to do two things very well, nap, and play. She plays with all kinds of farm animals each in their own ways. One day all the animals come to find her and they all want to play with her at the same time. This causes a problem of course and I am reminded of a situation with my teen, a social issue she has seen before herself. The moral of the story:

Jan17 016

A friend cannot be owned, that is plain to see, friendships must be shared, just like our friend, Ruby.

It is a delightful little story that comes together so well in part due to the art of Robin James. It is a book that I am glad to have as part of our collection. It is a lesson I think some adults even forget I have noticed.

This is one of those books perfect for bed time.

It might be a bit hard to find this book and the others in the Series but they are very worth the hunt!

I enjoy reading books I read as a child to my children. They also love to read and my son is now beginning to read to me. Such a wonderful way to spend time together.
