Are you waiting on things till the kids are grown too?

What is waiting on the kids?

So often I hear myself and others talking about the things they will get or replace or things they will do once the kids are grown. “Soon as little bobby is older we are going to get a boat!” I recall a woman saying. Another friend was busy planning her perfect vacation that they could take just as soon Melissa and Brian grow up.

Then there is me….. just as soon as the kids grow up we will get a new sofa!

 The Sofa Nightmare

While getting the pre-holiday cleaning done I found myself hand sewing, painfully I must add, the top of my sofa where the built in pillows meet the frame. You see my perfect snowflakes, the two youngest who are 4 and 7 and should know better, wanted to play with “snow” and so a small hole that had been created in our last move provided a great opportunity for them to pull the stuffing out, and make the hole much bigger.

I love peaceful parenting and natural consequences but it wasn’t as if I could ask the girls to sew up the sofa. I did have them help me restuff it with new while fluff. I could be see the sparkle in their eyes and knew they where day dreaming about their next pretend snow adventure. Hopefully when they saw me pouting and bleeding while sewing the sucker up that it helped them see that would not be the best idea.

We need a new sofa.

When it isn’t going to happen

While talking with friends about what things are waiting on our kids to grow up I mentioned the state of the sofa of course. Rebecca mentioned she isn’t getting a new one either till her kids are grown and out of the house. Till then she has been using a company that does upholstery cleaning Brooklyn ny to keep hers looking nice for company. I wonder if they have one like that here in the middle of no place Georgia as it might give my sofa a few more years of life. I can’t believe we are having another baby while also having to think about college for our oldest. It seems unreal. At this rate, all the plans for “when the kids are grown” are never going to happen. Or at least it feels like that. Of course they are worth it. Worth it all.

Life is too short to keep waiting?

I am reminded though that life is short! Another friend mentioned how she got rid of her sofa and picked up a bean bag sofa. She is clearly embracing the now! She said her life revolves around the kids and if company doesn’t like her sofa, they don’t have to come over. Good on her!

How do you balance it all?
