A Valentine Craft for Kids

This project takes a little bit of prep work that is best done the night before. Gather what ever kind of pasta you would like the children to work with, for about 8 pages of hearts I used about 2 cups of pasta, I used two different kinds of pastas and next time I do this project I will try some others as well.

I let my dry pasta sit in baggies of rubbing alcohol with red food coloring mixed in on the counter over night. I flipped them over a few times to insure equal color distribution. In the morning I opened the bow ties and thought to rinse them out before laying the pasta out on paper towels to dry. Don’t do this! It took that pasta much longer to dry and broke many pieces. Just dump the alcohol down the drain and lay out the pasta, it dries very fast this way, within an hour.

Have glue and heave card stock or card board ready to go, lay out the past and let the kids go at it. They asked me to out line hears for them and so I did so in light colored pencil. They they covered those areas with glue and added the pasta. The glue we used dries clear and gives a nice finished product. The kids really enjoyed the project and it kept them busy, happy, and quiet for a few hours!

Best for children who will not put things in their mouths! My 5 year old and 7 year old had no issues at all with this project beyond wanting help drawing symmetrical hearts and after the first few I helped with I insisted they practice on their own!

If you do this project, let us know how it went!

  1. What a cute idea. I always wondered how people colored their pasta. Kraft should update that cute father and son commercial where they are offended that the sister did art like this with the Mac and Cheese for Valentine’s Day.

This looks like so much fun, with Valentine’s Day being tomorrow, I had better run to the store.
