The freezing temperatures that come with the winter months force us all inside seeking relief from the cold. While adults may be content getting cozy with a good book or a cup of tea on the couch, children are known to go absolutely stir crazy when stuck inside for an extended period of time. Here are some great ideas for keeping the kids entertained and happy this winter.

1. Get Outdoors

Even when it’s cold outside, it is important for kids to get outside and run and play in the fresh air. When properly bundled up, kids can safely play for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Encourage them to play outdoors in all but the harshest of weather conditions. The winter is a great time to go for a walk, play at the park or play in your own backyard.

2. Plan Indoor Activities

When it’s not possible to spend a good amount of time outside, it’s time to find indoor activities to occupy the children. Museums, movie theaters and indoor nature centers are all ideal ways to pass the time. Look into events happening in your town and make it a point to attend as many as possible this winter.

3. Bake Together

Kids love to help out in the kitchen. When the weather makes it difficult to get outside, you can invite them to join you for a cooking or baking project. Let them pick a favorite recipe or try out a brand new one.

4. Make Being Inside Fun

Parents can make it fun to be stuck indoors. Have arts and crafts supplies on hand for an impromptu craft session. Invite friends over for a play date. Play board games or watch movies together as a family. The fun indoor options are endless!

5. Join Indoor Teams and Clubs

There are many indoor activities that will keep kids busy during the winter. Gymnastics, dance and swimming all provide opportunities for physical activity that takes place out of the cold elements. Those who live in New York City can look into NYC swim lessons for kids. Art clubs, Boy or Girl Scouts and 4-H are some other great choices.

With a little creative thinking, it’s easy to keep the kids entertained and happy during the winter. Enjoy your time together and stay warm!
