5 Things to Make Moving Day Easier for Families

As the big day approaches, it is important that you plan ahead when moving your family. Moving day is not the time to be figuring where your kid’s stuffed animals are, what you’re eating for lunch or where your contact case is. By thinking ahead and staying organized, you can drastically lower the stress level and discomfort that is often associated with moving.

Pack a surprise gift box- Children often suffer during a move. If you can’t find child care for the day, their food, sleep and entertainment needs still have to be met. When you finally arrive at the new home, let your child unpack the first box. Fill this box with special snacks, stuffed animals, and fun games. Start collecting gifts weeks before the move and the morning of the move, toss in those special last-minuet items like blankies or stuffed friends. Load this on the truck last so it will be the first box to unload. Your children will love being greeted by their old friends in their new home.

Pack an “OPEN FIRST” box

Pack things like bottled water, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies and scissors in a basic needs box. There is nothing more frustrating than feeling paralyzed by disorganization. You will need these items almost immediately upon moving in, so make sure you have them on stand-by.

Research the area

If you are moving to a new location pick a lunch or dinner location before moving. Since you won’t be familiar with the area and internet won’t be installed at your new place finding a restaurant could cause more of a headache than you would have anticipated. Don’t even think about cooking for the first few days.

Book a hotel

If you can afford it, it’s often a good idea to book a hotel the night you move homes. Moving isn’t as simple as unpacking your bags. Usually you have to set up a bed, and then dig out blankets and sheets. If you have kids, multiply this task. There is nothing wrong with spending one day getting to the house, and then spending the next day getting your necessities. Spend the night in-between sleeping in a bed with clean sheets, watching TV, and sending your kids to the pool.

Breathe- Don’t rush unpacking. You have the rest of your life to settle in so don’t feel bad about a basement full of unpacked boxes.
