3 Little Minecrafters up all night in bed….

Yes we homeschool and yes our kids play minecraft! It seems like some silly stereo type but this one actually fits us! Of course there are many homeschooling stereo types that don’t fit. We don’t homeschool for religious reasons as we are secular homeschoolers. We are good without god believe it or not! Or at least most of us are. We are trying to raise children who think for themselves who are brave enough to go their own way and to question Authority, even our own. So of course that means out teen goes and picks to be Christian! We love her for being herself and support her even if we believe different in that area.

So whats with minecraft game and homeschoolers? It is a blocky game that at first looks antiquated and boring. I didn’t get it at first honestly, or even the second time. I did though want to keep trying to understand why so many love it. Before I knew it I too was sucked in building little towns and castles with the kids, going “cave diving” as a family in hopes we could all keep one another alive. I learned quickly just how great minecraft was in helping to teach a bit of human history and evolution. Like early man you start out with nothing. You have to hunt for food, build basic shelter, often the first being a hole in the ground or a cave in the side of a mountain, you have to work to get fire, ย and eventually can farm and work with minerals to make tools and then armor and better weapons and then even machines! There are so many Mods that you can add to help teach different things and the kids are learning new things all the time. It is up to the parents or teachers to add the context and help them understand what they are doing in the language of learning and putting things in context.

So maybe homeschoolers love minecraft because it brings us back to basics a bit, a hardship in our every day lives humans have mostly forgotten, or maybe homeschoolers love it because the options are near endless for their creative minds, not to mention the social aspect for public servers! Personally while I sometimes have to remind my kids who stay up playing minecraft late that sleep is important, I wouldn’t take minecraft from them and I will keep looking for ways to include it in their learning time.

I live on Fort Meade as well! I found your website after doing a search for Corvias electrical issues. It’s so refreshing to see a secular homeschooler. I don’t homeschool my kids, but I have a deep respect for mothers who do and, especially those who do not drown their children with stories from the Bible. Anyway! My kids love Minecraft, too. I was so shocked when my 10 year old designed his own “modern” house. The house had such amazing detail, I was so happy to see his creativity. We have gotten books for him, and he’s delving deeper into designing. I love it and I won’t be taking it away, either. ๐Ÿ™‚

We are no longer living on Fort Meade but goodness I know just what your talking about with Corvias electrical issues. Passing the buck is an understatement there! Thus when we moved we choose to live off post! If you get the run around don’t forget you can go to the IG about it all!
