A few years ago my family came upon a tradition we wanted to include in our home. Each night of December before the 25th, we gather and open and read a new book together. The theme of our holidays is secular and so the topics of the books can be anything. We specially though love books that help support the morals we believe in, equality, human rights, social justice, being helpful, do unto others, ect. Some books though are just beautiful and silly and fun. This year many of the books are new to the market, just published in 2016!

Some families call this tradition an Advent Book Calendar and I didn’t want to do that this year as Advent is a religious word and I don’t want to take anything away from that sacred time of year for those who believe. Advent though does come from a Latin word meaning “coming” and certainly we are opening new books in celebration and anticipation of Yule/Christmas, our secular little holiday of light, love, hope, and family. You do you! Call it what you like to celebrate what ever it is you and your children celebrate! Who doesn’t love any excuse for fantastic new books and cuddle time to read with the kids?
